Discovering Ho Chi Minh City
Getting There and Around
Vietnam is a destination filled with rich history and vibrant culture, but before you pack your bags, here's a crucial travel tip for Americans - you'll need a visa to enter the country. You can handle this at the airport, but it's best to do a bit of prep work beforehand. I opted for a guide service that made the process easier and quicker, whisking us through an alternate passport line. It was worth every penny! Once you've cleared immigration be sure to grab some Vietnamese Dung at the airport. I'd arranged transportation through our hotel, but taxis are also readily available if you prefer that option.
Where to Stay
For those who enjoy the bustling heart of the city, staying in District 1 is a must. We chose The Reverie Saigon, a stunning hotel that's a design enthusiast's dream. Imagine a fusion of traditional and contemporary Italian design—you'll be drooling over the detail work, just like I was. Staying here not only offers exquisite accommodations but also places you minutes away from many of Ho Chi Minh's iconic sights, making it perfect for walking tours and convenient pick-ups for guided excursions.
Exploring the City
Ho Chi Minh City is a whirlwind of sights and sounds, and here are a few highlights that were just steps away from our hotel:
City Hall: This architectural gem shines, especially when illuminated at night.
Nguyen Van Binh Book Street: A paradise for book lovers, this charming street is lined with quaint shops and peaceful reading spots.
Opera House: Catch a show for a cultural evening out. We saw the A O Show, and it was breathtaking!
Navigating the city's traffic can be daunting, so be cautious while crossing roads. For getting around, download the GRAB app—it's like Uber but with motorbike options for quicker commutes.
Must-See Spots
For Instagram-worthy moments, visit Cafe Apartments, which is packed with trendy cafes and shops. A stroll along the Saigon River offers stunning views and water taxi rides. Don't miss the Bitexco Financial Tower for panoramic city views from its 68th-floor observation deck.
Dive into history at the War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace, or enjoy a relaxing walk through Tao Dan Park. If you're in the mood for entertainment, the Golden Dragon Theater hosts captivating water puppet shows.
Tours and Experiences
We booked the XO Tour—a thrilling motorbike adventure led by knowledgeable guides. You're picked up right at your hotel and whisked around the city, sampling local delicacies and uncovering hidden gems. The tour's photo package is a must-have for capturing the experience. If you have a day to spare, venture out to the Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta for an unforgettable trip through Vietnam's history and natural beauty.
Culinary Delights
Ho Chi Minh City is a culinary hub with options ranging from Michelin-starred restaurants to delicious street food. At The Reverie Saigon, we indulged in a six-course tasting menu with wine pairings for just $300 USD. Other top dining spots include:
Lusine for French-Vietnamese cuisine
Ngon Restaurant near The Cafe Apartments for affordable, authentic dishes
Ben Thanh Ward for flavorful street food
